Esther Gómez Lacabex

Dr. Esther Gómez Lacabex is a member of the consolidated research group Language and Speech at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). For the past 18 years, she has been continuously involved in competitive research projects submitted by members of the Language and Speech group. She has published in international journals such as The Canadian Modern Language Review, International Journal of Applied Linguistics, International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, and Journal of Second Language Pronunciation. Her research on the effects of phonetic instruction, conducted within research projects led by M. L. García Lecumberri, has been included in recent meta-analyses (Sakai & Moorman, 2018; Thomson & Derwing, 2015; Lee, Jang & Plonsky, 2015).

She has also investigated the acquisition of pronunciation from a more communicative perspective, focusing on aspects such as intelligibility and comprehensibility in content-based language learning contexts. This work has been carried out within LASLAB projects led by D. Lasagabaster and has resulted in publications in journals such as Journal of English Studies, European Journal of Applied Linguistics, International Review of Applied Linguistics, Research in Language, and Atlantis, as well as in the volume Content and Language Integrated Learning in Europe.

At present, Dr. Gómez Lacabex also collaborates on research projects outside UPV/EHU funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICIN), including project PID2020-115327RB-I00 at the University of Cantabria. She has participated in the organization of a variety of national and international academic events, including the annual LASLAB events, the biennial conference English Pronunciation: Issues and Practices (EPIP 2024), and the Methodological Workshops on L2 Sound Acquisition Research Methodology held in 2024 and 2025. In addition, she has served as coordinator of the Phonetics and Phonology Panel of the Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies (AEDEAN), demonstrating her active engagement in national and international networks of scholars dedicated to the study of second language (L2) speech acquisition. She is also co-author, together with C. Bueno-Alastuey (Public University of Navarre), of the invited chapter Technology and Pronunciation in the recent volume The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Technology.
