Modesto Corderi

Dr. Modesto Corderi Novoa defended his Ph.D. dissertation entitled “The impact of performative language teaching on oral skills in a Chinese as a foreign language classroom” on November 17th, 2020 at the University of the Basque Country UPV EHU. Modesto obtained the highest mark, “cum laude.” Moreover, his work has been proposed to receive the Outstanding Ph.D. (Premio Extraordinario) dissertation award. His Ph.D. was supervised by Professor Dr. María Pilar García Mayo.He obtained his B.A. with honors in Chinese Philology at Beijing Language and Culture University in China. He also holds two masters: an M.A. in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages MTCSOL at Beijing Language and Culture University in China and an M.A. in Education and English Teaching Training for Professional, Secondary, and Language Teachers from the International University of Valencia (VIU). In addition, he obtained a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate from The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He also holds a Computer Engineering Technical degree from the University of Vigo (2006).Modesto worked from 2016 to 2020 at the Xunta de Galicia local government Escuela Oficial de Idiomas as a Chinese teacher, Head of Department, and teacher-training specialist. Also, Modesto has worked as a Spanish teacher at The George Washington University in Washington D.C., as a Chinese and Spanish teacher at Tsinghua University in Beijing, as a Spanish teacher at Instituto Cervantes in Beijing, China, and at several universities and schools in China.He had previously been awarded Fundación Pedro Barrié de la Maza and Confucius Institute scholarships.

Research Interests

Performative Language Teaching (PLT). Theater. Drama.Language pedagogy and the use of new teaching methods in the language classroom, specifically the use of PLT in language teaching and learning.Teaching Chinese as a foreign language.  Teaching Spanish as a foreign language.  Research in TESOL.
