Yolanda Ruiz de Zarobe

Yolanda Ruiz de Zarobe is Full Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain. She teaches undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses and seminars at the University of the Basque Country and at several national and international universities, mainly on L2 and L3 acquisition, multilingualism and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).

She has edited around 20 books and special issues for prestigious international and national publishers (Multilingual Matters, Routledge, Octaedro, Peter Lang, Springer) and journals (International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, International Journal of Multilingualism, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Language, Culture and Curriculum). She has also given more than 100 presentations in conferences and directed or taken part in over 20 courses on applied linguistics and multilingualism.

She has been principal investigator of several national projects awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Innovation on multilingualism, L3 acquisition and CLIL involving several leading national and international researchers and experts. She has also participated in several European projects, some of them funded by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) on such areas as multilingualism and foreign language learning, and sustainable development in a diverse world.

Part of her research has been complemented by long-term research stays, mainly as visiting academic, at the University of Reno (2007), McGill in Montreal (2008), Trinity College Dublin (September-December 2009), Georgetown University (2010), Oxford University (September-December 2010), Harvard University (2011), University of Hawaii at Manoa (2012), University of Miami (2016), Stanford University (2017), University of Cape Town (2019), Universidad de la Sabana, Colombia (2022) and Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola, Perú (2023).

She has given invited talks and keynote speeches at universities and conferences in Spain, in Europe (Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Poland, UK), in the United States and in the rest of the world (Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Peru, Uzbekistan, among others).

She has also undertaken teaching stays at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (Slovakia, 2009), Limerick University (Ireland, 2010), Università degli Studi di Bari (Italy, 2012), Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy, 2019) and University of Calabria (Italy, 2022).

As an international expert on multilingualism and CLIL, she is a member of the executive committee of the International Association for Language Awareness and a member of the editorial board of several journals such as the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, the International Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education, the International Journal of Literacy, Culture and Language Education and UJA Editorial (Lingüística). She is a reviewer for most of the journals and publishers of impact in her area of research.

Since 2007 she has been an external expert in several international research projects and a reviewer for ANEP (Spanish Evaluation and Foresight Agency). She has also been a member of the Accrediting Commission E-20-Arts and Humanities- of ANECA (Spanish National Agency of Quality Evaluation and Accreditation) from 2016 to 2019 and since 2022 she is Secretary of the ANECA Review Commission E-20. She also evaluates applications for promotion in North American universities.

An expert in public speaking, she is a Distinguished Toastmaster of Toastmasters International.

A keen sportswoman, she has completed all six World Marathon Majors: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City, and several triathlons, mainly in Spain.

Research Interests

Her recent publications have focused on:

– Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).  Her book Content and Foreign Language Integrated Learning: Contributions to Multilingualism in European Contexts, co-edited with Juan Sierra and Francisco Gallardo del Puerto, received the Spanish Society of Applied Linguistics (AESLA) award for senior researchers in 2013.
